An extraordinary setting for your visit to Laguna [Recently featured in Sunset Magazine--March, 2002]
These garden cottages capture the essence of the Laguna experience. They have been fully restored and renovated to blend the unique charm of the original art colony with modern ammenities to meet the needs of today's discerning traveler.
Nestled in a secluded garden compound the property is tucked away in a historic residential district distant enough from the noisy traffic and congestion of the Pacific Coast Highway to provide the serenity necessary for a quiet getaway--yet close in enough for a stroll to the beach, restaurants, bakeries, galleries and art festivals.
Each cottage (along with the studio apartment) has been furnished with carefully selected artwork that will especially appeal to the guests seeking a restful retreat for their stay in Laguna.
Cottage guests enjoy a fully equipped kitchen, fine linens and bedding, cable televion, CD/cassette stereo, telephone with separate data port, gas fireplace, a king size bed in the bedroom and a sleeper sofa in the living room.
A studio apartment is available on the property with equally fine appointments. The apartment is ideal for single guests or a couple seeking a more economical experience. In many cases our family guests augment the limited cottage sleeping space by adding the apartment to their lodging plans.
A colorful past, a charming present...
In 1927 film producer, Harry Greene, commissioned local architect, Thomas Harper, to design four cottages set in a private, walled compound on the slopes above the village of Laguna.? Harper had just returned from Europe and was enthusiastic about bringing a taste of the old world to this unique assignment.
Greene's vision was to create a private setting where he could invite his friends for overnight get-aways far from the intensity of the Hollywood studios.? At this time major film stars were turning Laguna Beach into a chic bohemian resort town, and Greene saw his cottage compound as a way to be part of the action--the ultimate combination of business with pleasure.
Little is known today about the guest lists at these gatherings, although we do know that Joan Crawford and her husband Franchot Tone were partial to the Yellow Cottage.
The layout of the property allowed Mr. Greene to host larger group gatherings in and around the center courtyard with the charming wishing well serving as a perfect centerpiece.?
In contrast smaller, more private gatherings could be hosted in the individual cottages allowing guests more intimate interactions midst the romance and charm of a crackling fire.
Jane Gilman, whose family purchased the cottages later in the 1930's remembers as a young girl what it was like living across the street from the cottages.? Now well into her 80's Jane recalls, with a twinkle in her eye: "It was a hell of a playground!"
?
Greene's vision still works today for guests seeking lodging in an individual cottage or to use the entire compound for family reunions, small gatherings and intimate weddings.
The guiding philosohpy of our recent restoration and renovation effort is to create the feeling of a 1930's vacation cottage while taking advantage of the conveniences of today's modern ammenities.? Under the direction of Nancy Duesenberg of Duesenberg Designs in Newport Beach, CA, the cottage interiors have been significantly renovated and upgraded. While the kitchens and baths are not specifically period restorations, they do capture a certain sense of a 1930's style with unique colors and artistic tiles.
The four free-standing cottages each face the? center courtyard set in a walled garden.? Each cottage is approximately 500 square feet and includes a bedroom, bathroom, living room, kitchen, dining area, fireplace (gas logs), and small private patio garden off the bedroom. Two of the cottages have open beamed ceilings.? There is also a studio apartment on the property with a queen size bed, galley kitchen, full shower/bathroom, and sitting area which includes TV/VCR
The cottages and the apartment are fully furnished with linens and beddings.? The kitchens are fully stocked with cooking utensils, flatware, etc.? The only items that guests need to supply themselves are personal care products, and food.
We'll be happy to work with you on how to make these cottages work best for you as an individual guest or as a larger gathering for family.
