Rhodes
Rhodes is the furthest south eastern island of Greece and the largest island of the Dodecanes, a complex of islands in the south of the Aegean Sea. It is a very popular, cosmopolitan island, where both Venetian and Turkish influence are apparent, giving it a special charm. The continual sunshine - an average 300 days of sunshine a year, the mild climate and the geographical position are the main factors that Rhodes was inhabited already in prehistoric times. The city is divided in two. The new city with its modern buildings, hotels, fashionable and traditional shops and numerous restaurants and the medieval walled city, full of impressive 15th century buildings. Rhodes is a big island with a lot to see. We suggest a visit to the town of Lindos located southeast of Rhodes, where the Acropolis of Lindos, is situated. The Valley of the butterflies is also worth a visit. For swimming we present you some of the beautiful beaches of Rhodes.

Sponge fishing is almost a dead industry in Greece. Only a generation ago, 2,000 divers worked waters around the island; today only a handful undertake this dangerous work, and most do so in the waters around Italy and Africa. Working at depths of 50m to 60m (164 ft.-197 ft.) (in the old days often without any apparatus), many divers were crippled or killed by the turbulent sea and too-rapid depressurization. The few sponges that are still harvested around Symi -- and many more imported from Asia or Florida -- are sold at shops along the port. Even if they're not from Symi's waters, they make inexpensive and lightweight gifts.

Vacationer Feedback

We stayed at Villa Azur with a five and two year old for a week. The administration before we arrived was very efficient and we were greeted by the lovely Claudia who welcomed us with wine, bread and other goodies to get us started. We even had a fresh bunch of flowers to enjoy. Villa Azur was better than the photos and exceeded our expectations - it had a lovely homely feel and everything we needed. A lot of thought has gone into the decor and special touches like lanterns with tea-lights that helped make if feel like home. We especially liked the lovely back garden where we sat most evenings. One of the best things about Villa Azur was its location. We didnt feel the need to stray too far from the old town and so spent most days exploring on foot. Having free internet access was very helpful and the DVD player helped entertain the kids during those moments. We rate this place as one of the best we have stayed. In fact, if two or more families wanted to enjoy Rhodes, they could rent Villa Rosa that adjoins the back garden as well. We feel we have had a unique Rhodes experience because of our stay here - we highly recommend it.

The good points are: 1. A good location to discover the old & new city within a couple of minutes by just walking 2. Very silent and private location to rest 3. Much enough space for a family with 2 children 4. Very clean, furnished newly and full equipped 5. Experienced no problem at all during our stay 6. A very kind hospitality by the Owner. The weak point may be: 1. No car entrance allowed (since it is in Old city) but can reach by 5 min walking from outside car park.
