This area first made it on the map in 1876 when Lt. Colonel George Armstrong Custer struck gold in nearby French Creek. The area later became known as Custer, South Dakota, and has evolved into a popular Black Hills destination close to many South Dakota attractions. Custer State Park, South Dakota's first park, is a 71,000 acre oasis offering amazing scenery, challenging outdoor adventure and a herd of more than 1,500 free-roaming buffalo. Visitors flock to Custer State Park to test their endurance with outdoor pursuits like mountain biking, hiking, rock climbing, kayaking and canoeing. Less rigorous offerings include boating on one of several lakes, fishing, horseback riding, jeep tours and history walks. Even the youngest family members can enjoy chuck wagon dinners, summer stock theater productions and interpretive productions focusing on the history of Custer. Custer's central location and close proximity to other Black Hills travel destinations like Lead, Sturgis and Mount Rushmore make it a perfect place to stay while on a South Dakota vacation. A wonderful tourist destination year-round, Custer is particularly popular during the Sturgis Bike Rally, held each August. Custer is just five minutes from the Crazy Horse Memorial, the largest on-going mountain carving in the world. Begun more than sixty years ago by Sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski, the Crazy Horse Memorial will be 563 feet high upon completion. Today, Ziolkowski's family continues the legacy of his carving. Popular lodging options in Custer are charming rustic cabins and intimate bed and breakfasts. Both are a wonderful way experience the friendly hospitality of this charming South Dakota city.
