La Paloma is a coastal town that similar in landscape to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. South Americans have been visiting this secret spot for years – the lighthouse near the ocean waters watch over the few tourists that you will find relaxing on these beaches. It’s a perfect opportunity for you to carve out your own, private place in the sand and forget that the rest of the world even exists!
 
For a little more beach-related excitement, head over to Punta del Este. This resort town has restaurants, casinos, and a harbor full of yachts! This town is known for its gorgeous sunsets, which you can catch from either side of the stunning peninsula. And, being a peninsula, you have your pick of which kind of ocean waters you prefer – calm and quiet or windy and perfect for surfing!
 
Periapolis, another small beach town, is pretty much a more laidback version of Punta del Este. You still have the gorgeous coastal waters but with a lot less tourists to bump into. And there are still plenty of casinos to pass the time in, but a few less fancy restaurants. While you’re in Periapolis, you can’t miss a sunset stroll down the Rambla de los Argentinos, the waterfront promenade. And take a ride up to the Templo de San Antonio – it offers an amazing view Uruguay’s stunning coastline.
 
So take a Uruguay vacation and spend your days learning to tango or saying hello to the sea lions at the Isla del Lobos, a protected nature reserve.
