There is a forest located to the east and the west of the city—Chequamegon National Forest is on left and the Ottawa National Forest on the right. The Chequamegon National Forest is known as a water wonderland and is a popular fishing destination. Anglers can expect to catch a wide variety of fish—up to 50 different species—including walleye, various types of trout and bass, pike, and bluegill. Hikers would more enjoy the Ottawa National Forest because it has almost 200 miles of trails that offer spectacular views of waterfalls, rolling hills, and wildlife. The second W, wildlife, is abundant in Hurley. The timber wolf can be frequently spotted all over the state of Wisconsin. Hunters and trappers can visit Hurley for their shot at deer, beaver, moose, and elk. If you are merely interested in wildlife viewing, the bird population, which includes falcons, cranes, swans, and loons, is vast and interesting in the city. The waterfalls are abundant in Hurley, featuring over 50 of varying sizes. The tallest in the area is located on the Montreal River, Superior Falls. Potato River Falls and Saxon Falls both come in at a close second at 90 feet tall a piece. The rushing water of the natural falls provide an exhilarating backdrop for brave kayakers. The two main events of Hurley yearly are the Red Light Snowmobile Rally and the ATV Hurley Rally.
