Like Colorado itself, the city of Aspen is known for its gorgeous scenery and outdoor activities. Aspen started out as a mining camp, named for its dense population of aspen trees, and has now come full circle as a city of upscale ski resorts and million dollar homes. To match these amenities, Aspen’s downtown area full of upscale shopping, swanky restaurants, and spas. Celebrities, such as Catherine Zeta Jones, Victoria Beckham, and Antonio Banderas, are said to have vacation homes in Aspen, and even more celebrities pour into the town once a year for the Aspen Film Festival. The Aspen Film Festival takes place during the winter and peak skiing season and showcases movies which are thought to be independent by nature but that also are starred in and directed by some of the biggest names in the movie industry. Aside from celebrity sightings, Aspen is known for its skiing. The three most popular ski areas in Aspen are Buttermilk, Aspen Highlands, and Snowmass. Snowmass is an area owned and operated by the Aspen Skiing Company. As the largest mountain in Aspen, Snowmass has also become the most popular. As a resort, Snowmass has a very family-friendly atmosphere, beginner and extreme skiing experiences, and all types of lodging. The Aspen Music Festival, to go along with the very refined feel of the city, is an internationally renowned classical music festival that is held throughout the entire summer, June to August. With up to 8 events happening every day over a 9-week period, the Aspen Music Festival is able to explore every aspect of classical music, from chamber music to opera to the more contemporary works.
