St. Kitts and Nevis Rentals By Owner
St. Kitts and Nevis is a two-island country, and is the very smallest country in the Americas, whether you are measuring by land area or by population. These are volcanic islands with rich ecosystems and relatively limited development. You can enjoy hiking in the mountains and rainforests, swimming in lagoons by the ocean, or relaxing on the beautiful beaches. These islands are known for their many species of rare tropical birds. There are also lots of friendly monkeys, allegedly brought here by pirates! Step into the forest and hold out a bit of fruit, and soon you’ll make lots of cute and funny little friends. These islands are gorgeous and fun places to stay for your island vacation rental!
The islands were inhabited for five thousand years by native Indians, and were also among the first areas in the Americans to be settled by Europeans, who began building settlements here in the early 1600s. The rich island culture blends together African, English and French elements, and this is reflected in everything from the food to the art, music and architecture.
St. Kitts is the larger island, at 68 square miles, and has a population of 35,000 residents. Visitors enjoy the Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park, which centers on an engineering marvel of the 17th and 18th century, the Brimstone Hill Fortress. If you hike up the steep 800-foot hill, you will be rewarded with the sight of this amazingly preserved and restored stone complex, which marks the beginning of British colonization of the Americas. You can also look out onto breathtaking views of the Caribbean!
The mountains of St. Kitts offer wonderful hiking through lush rainforest, with a variety of trails that bring you close to the amazing diversity of rare plant and animal life on the island. You can take a steep hike or a leisurely one, but it is recommended that you hire a local guide or join a group. The rainforest is constantly reclaiming the trails, so it is easy to lose your way without a knowledgeable (though you’ll never get lost in a more beautiful place!)
A great way to tour St. Kitts is a ride on the St. Kitts Scenic Railway! Known as the "Last Railway in the West Indies," this three-hour tour will take you through mountains, rainforest, and cane and pineapple fields, past secluded beaches, over deep canyons, past the ruins of old plantations, and through the modern inhabited villages of St. Kitts. This is a unique way to learn about the island’s geography and history, not available on most Caribbean islands.
The villages of St. Kitts, especially the capital Basseterre, are full of colorful local restaurants and nightlife. You can enjoy the mouthwatering local cuisine, rich in seafood and tropical plants, or stop by one of the restaurants that serve American or European fare.
It is highly recommended that you enjoy a vacation rental on St. Kitts around Christmas time, when you can take in the island’s carnival, which includes traditional African-style Clowns, Moko-Jumbies (stilt walkers who dance!), and Actors (acrobats).
Nevis, at 36 square miles, is the smaller and quieter of the two islands. Whether you want to relax by the ocean and watch the whales go by, or take a scenic hike up the Nevis Peak, the island’s volcanic mountain, this is a great vacation rental destination that is full of hidden wonders and island beauty. Nature tours are available with guides who will tell you about everything from the natural medicines that grow in the rainforest to the rich history of the island. The Golden Rock Nature Trail winds through lush tropical flowers and giant rainforest plants, and is hope to a playful troop of African Green Monkeys. And don’t forget the gorgeous beaches, great places to swim, dive, snorkel, or have some local rum and do nothing much at all!
Nevis has plenty of history to offer. Historic Charlestown features 18th-century Georgian architecture and is a fun place to shop or explore. Nevis was the birthplace of Alexander Hamilton, an author of the Constitution and the first Treasury Secretary of the United States. You can learn about him at the Museum of Nevis History and at Hamilton Plantation, which still has extensive ruins of the sugar mill and other major buildings. The island is dotted with many other ruins of plantations and churches dating back the 17th century.
The charming towns of Nevis are crowded with creature comforts, too—from restaurants serving tangy, spicy West Indian cuisine, as well as Continental and Asian food, to numerous day spas for some serious self-pampering.
The two-island nation of Saint Kitts and Nevis offer plenty to see, explore and experience for your Caribbean island vacation rental!
