The most inhabited island in the Bahamas, New Providence is a great choice for your vacation rental destination, with plenty of activities and an amazing history. During the 18th century, it hosted numerous Caribbean pirates, and the pirate Blackbeard tried to create a "Privateers’ Republic" here. In 1776, Fort Nassau was raided by American marines and sailors, who looted the British fort for cannons and munitions, which they turned over to George Washington. These were the Continental Marines and Navy, America’s first marine corps and navy, both disbanded after the Revolution.
 
As a major beach destination, New Providence has everything you would expect in a Caribbean vacation, from beautiful white beaches to sailing, snorkeling, diving, fishing and any kind of water adventure you could want. There are eighteen hole golf courses and plenty of tennis courts on the island.
 
Nassau is capital city of the Bahamas and has plenty to do! Shop at the Marina Village clothing boutiques, or try the downtown Straw Market for arts and crafts that reflect the island’s unique blend of British, Spanish and West African culture. Tour the historic areas of the island, such as Fort Fincastle, built in 1793, or the brightly colored Old Town section of Nassau. For families, there’s the Ardastra Gardens, Zoo & Conservation Center, where you can hand feed parrots and see hundreds of animal species, many of them endangered. And no visit would be complete without the Pirate Museum, where you can learn about the history of Caribbean piracy from the "Pirates of Nassau."
 
Dining options range from local spots, where conch and snapper are favorite, to very upscale dining with Continental cuisine or lobster, plus the familiar fast food restaurants. New Providence has a vibrant nightlife, with lots of bars and dance clubs, and the parties here get very wild. There are also two large casinos on the island.
