Cat Island Vacation Rentals and Lodging

Cat Island in the central Bahamas is a choice location for your beach vacation rental. A secluded island with a population of under two thousand, Cat Island is a place where you can spend hours strolling the pink beaches and looking out onto beautiful blue water without ever seeing a crowd.

Cat Island was named for the pirate Arthur Catt, and the island hasn’t changed much since he used it as a hideout. It is known for having the highest location in the Bahamas—Mount Alvernia, at 206 feet above sea level. Here, the architect and Catholic priest Jerome Hawes, who built many of the Catholic churches around the Caribbean, constructed his private retreat, a monastery called the Hermitage. Visitors can hike up the staircase carved into Mount Alvernia to see the medieval-style stone tower and buildings. You can also visit the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church on Cat Island, an architectural wonder designed and built by Father Jerome.

Other popular historical sites include the ruins of old plantation buildings and mansions, such as Armbrister Plantation and Deveaux House. Also see the birthplace of Sidney Poitier in South Bight.

Cat Island’s natural beauty offer great opportunities for hiking, exploring, snorkeling, fishing, sailing, and diving. The "Boiling Point," where a creek intersects a tidal lake with frothy, sloshing waters, is an interesting place to look for ocean creatures and tropical birds. Like many places on the island, local legend says this is an enchanted spot. Another is Mermaid Hole, a blue hole opening into underwater caves, said to be a mermaid’s home.

Your best bet for nightlife is Arthur’s Town, the island’s capital, also named after Arthur Catt. In these nightclubs originated the Caribbean "rake ‘n scrape" sound, a rhythmic island music created with materials that include conch shells and old hand tools.
