San Salvador Island in the Bahamas is where Christopher Columbus first landed in America. Today, and you can find markers on the island commemorating the event. These include a white cross called the Columbus Monument, and the Chicago Herald monument—which is a limestone sphere carved for the 1892 World’s Fair to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Columbus’ arrival. The New Santa Maria monument was created by Japanese designers and focuses on the explorer’s desire to sail to Asia. Less than a thousand people live on the island of San Salvador, mostly in the village of Cockburn Town, where they have a festival each Columbus Day. You can learn more about the island’s discovery at the New World Museum. The island remains very quiet and undeveloped, and is a good place to go if you want miles of unspoiled beaches looking out into crystal clear water. It is alluring for divers and snorkelers, with many shallow reefs where a colorful variety of fish can be seen near the surface, and lots of fascinating shipwrecks under the water. The continental shelf also drops off near the island, into very deep water that is good for diving among the giant creatures of the sea. San Salvador is a very untouched island, and the Gerace Research Centre is here for this reason—so that geology and biology students can observe the natural world. Stepping back from nature a, you can visit the numerous ruins of old plantations scattered around the island. There are a few restaurants, including pricier ones at the resorts on the islands, or local places where you can drink in conch chowder and try the tangy island barbecue. If you want crowds of tourists and traffic everywhere you go, avoid San Salvador Island. But if you want to be surrounded by natural beauty and enjoy beautiful beaches all to yourself, enjoy a vacation rental on San Salvador Island! San Salvador Area Map for Your Vacation Planning |
