Rum Cay is an out-island of the Bahamas measuring only 30 square miles and most of the island’s 100 residents live in the tiny village of Port Nelson. To truly get away from it all, Rum Cay is an ideal island vacation rental destination, with gorgeous unspoiled beaches looking out onto endless sparkling ocean water. This is the place to visit for solitude, romance, or outdoor adventure on the ocean.

At the Port Nelson marina, you can visit the island’s restaurant and various small stores, or set out for a fishing, sailing, or diving experience. Rum Cay has some of the world’s most attractive and varied diving, from luscious coral gardens in the shallows brimming with tropical plants and creatures, to sea walls, deep water dropping to 3,000 feet, and amazing formations like the Grand Canyon, formed by a 60-foot coral wall.

Another must-visit is the island’s famous museum—located not on land, but underwater! The HMS Conqueror was built for the Crimean War and sank at Summer Point Reef off Port Nelson in 1861. Because it has been marked as a museum, divers are not allowed to take any artifacts from the famous shipwreck. This means there are plenty of underwater ruins for you to see.

On the land, you can hike among the coconut groves and pristine wilderness of the Rum Cay Inland. Though nearly deserted today, the island was once home to thousands of inhabitants, and now the many ruins of pineapple plantations and abandoned villages provide some of the most interesting, mysterious and unexpected hiking experiences you can find anywhere.
