Acklins Island Rentals By Owner

Acklins Island is a rare jewel, one of the small islands of the Bahamas that remain mostly unknown to the outside world. At just 92 square miles, and no wider than four miles at its thickest point, Acklins is one of the less inhabited islands of the Bahamas. It has about 400 residents, most of whom make their living through small-scale fishing and farming.

Acklins is located on the Bight of Acklins, a thousand-square mile lagoon formed by islands and coral reefs. This area is a treasure for its fantastic diving, including grottos, caves, and coral gardens, and also deep sea walls for the adventurous underwater explorer. Because of its remote and undeveloped location, Acklins offers some of the best deep-sea fishing you can find. Another popular activity is bonefishing, and local guides will show you the best places for any of these activities.

On the land, you can explore miles of absolutely gorgeous and unblemished beaches, which fold into many secluded coves along the rugged shore. Or hike among the island’s large and enchanting rock formations. Because the island is so untouched by commercial development, it is one of the best places to look for Lucayan Indian artifacts, and you can often find anthropologists from National Geographic doing just that as they seek to understand this vanished ancient society.

You can explore the tiny hamlets of Acklins Island and talk with friendly locals, and also visit the Castle Island Lighthouse, just off the tip of Acklins Island, which was once a lookout where pirates watched for ships to attack.

The Plana Cays are tiny uninhabited islands just east of Acklins Island, which is a wilderness area that is home to the very rare Bahamian hutia, a small rabbit-like mammal native to the Bahamas, which was once thought to be extinct. These cays are also a protected habitat for the Acklins Ground Iguana, another rare island creature.

Also close by is Samana Cay, a now-uninhabited island where you can visit the ruins of the abandoned settlement and explore a little more island wilderness!

For a rustic island vacation that brings you close to the natural world of land and sea, enjoy a beach vacation rental on Acklins Island this year!
