Great Inagua Rentals By Owner

Inagua is a district of the Bahamas consisting of two islands, Little Inagua and Great Inagua. Little Inagua is an uninhabited park and nearly impossible to reach, even by boat, because of its sharp coral reefs. A vacation rental on Great Inagua is a wonderful choice for your island getaway, because the island is full of natural beauty and sparsely inhabited, with around 1,000 residents, bringing the charm of small-town island life.

You won’t find much commercial development or any crowds, but instead you’ll be surrounded by beautiful beaches and crystal clear water that offers some of the richest, most vibrant underwater life in the world. Be sure to bring an underwater camera, because you’ll be snorkeling and diving among a lush underwater jungle full of bright colors and marvelous sea creatures.

The interior of the island is home to 287 square miles controlled as a wildlife preserve by the Bahamas National Trust. This sanctuary brought the West Indian Flamingo back from the brink of extinction. Now tens of thousands of flamingos inhabit the island, making it home to the world’s largest flocks of these lovely birds. The flamingos are also drawn here by the Morton Salt Company—and the flamingos are some of Morton Salt’s best employees! They keep the salt lagoons cleaned out by eating out brine shrimp and other creatures.

The island is home to thousands of different parrots, ducks, herons and other water-loving birds. Other wild animals on the island include populations of wild donkeys, cows, hogs, goats, turtles, lizards and even cats! Many domestic creatures have gone "back to nature" in this wonderful rugged environment.

In the island’s capital, Matthew Town, you can visit the harbor, as well as small restaurants, bars, and dance clubs. Locals can tell you about the island’s colorful history; countless Spanish treasure ships and other boats have wrecked here through the centuries. Legend has it that the Haitian king Henri Christophe buried a huge amount of treasure on the island, which has never been discovered.

A great time to visit Great Inagua is at the beginning of August when they celebrate Emancipation Day. This is also known as "Homecoming" because Inaguans from around the world come back to visit at this time. You can enjoy activities as diverse as "Rake n Scrape" music competitions, boat racing, and conch-cracking, beer-drinking, and wet t-shirt contests, as well as the native cuisine and arts of the Bahamas.

Inagua offers wonderful adventure and island mystery in a serene and beautiful environment—a great choice for an island vacation rental that gets you out into the wild!
