Mayaguana is usually called the most "out" of the out-islands in the Bahamas. It is the easternmost island in the Bahamas, and was never inhabited until 1812. Today, it has about 300 inhabitants, who live in the island’s three villages: Abraham’s Bay (the largest hamlet), Betsy Bay and Pirate’s Well. It is the least inhabited and least developed Bahamian island, and so the perfect place to get away if you want a world of completely unspoiled, beautiful beaches and raw, natural tropical wilderness for your island vacation rental.

The three settlements offer some little bars, restaurants, and shops for your convenience, and the locals are some of the friendliest people you could meet. There are no banks, so bring cash! Expect business to be an informal affair. For example, there are no taxis or car rentals, but many locals are happy to give you a ride for a few dollars, and some will rent their personal vehicles to tourists. Just ask around for whatever you need!

Away from the three villages, you can stroll along the quiet and uninhabited beaches, or explore the hilly forests of the island’s interior. The wilderness is so pure that you won’t even find many trails. You will encounter all kinds of wildlife, especially turtles, iguanas and flocks of tropical birds. This area attracts serious mountain bikers and others interested in eco-tourism.

The clear emerald waters around the island hold fascinating underwater attractions like intricate and lively coral reefs and shipwrecks that date back several centuries. The fishing here is also amazing, since you are distant from any commercial fisheries. You can also travel east to visit the Plana Cays, two uninhabited islands that are home to rare creatures like the Acklins Ground Iguana and Bahamaian hutia, a rabbit-type mammal native to the Bahamas and once thought to be extinct.
