Crystal Beach, Texas is a charming Texas beach destination on the Bolivar Peninsula. The Bolivar Peninsula is a barrier island in the Texas Gulf Coast. A family-friendly location, Crystal Beach and the surrounding Peninsula offer twenty seven miles of pristine beaches where visitors and locals enjoy fishing, sunbathing and watersports. Shrimping and oystering are two of the main industries along Crystal Beach, affording vacationers some of the best freshly caught meals on the coast.
 
During the spring and fall months, birding is a popular activity and bird sanctuaries abound on the island. As the seasons change, birds of many species can be found in Crystal Beach when the migratory patterns bring Northern birds to the warm and sunny South Texas coast. Crystal Beach and Peninsula beaches are also unique in that bonfires are common and vehicles are allowed on the beach. However, vehicle beach permits are required and may be purchased for ten dollars through several businesses in town or the Galveston County Parks and Recreation Department.
 
Arriving on the island is fairly easy, as free ferries run from Galveston about every twenty minutes. The ferries transport cars as well as travelers and the twenty minute ride is just long enough to drink in the peaceful views and enjoy the chirping of the seagulls - and maybe even see a pod of dolphin.
 
In September 2008, Hurricane Ike struck the Bolivar Peninsula, devastating 3,600 homes. But in the last year, much progress has been made and abundant by owner vacation rentals are available.
