Just like its namesake, Holland is heavily influenced by Dutch culture. The Holland Museum , one of the three museums in the area, embraces the city’s Dutch heritage and exhibits Holland’s history. The other two museums in the area are the Cappon House Museum, a museum that was once the house of a former mayor, and the Settlers House Museum, which contains exhibits staged to look as if they are from the 19th century. Holland’s downtown area is almost like a museum itself, as it is part of the National Register of Historic Places . Aside from the beautifully preserved buildings, the city’s "Snowmelt Project" is what makes its downtown area so unique. Townspeople invented pipes to transport warm water that travels underneath Holland’s downtown area and clear the area of snow. The pipes have been preserved and the " Snowmelt Project " still intrigues any visitor to the city. Holland sits on the shores of Lake Michigan and Lake Macatawa, so during the summer boating and fishing are very popular in the area. The Holland State Park is a great destination in Holland. It is home of the great Holland Harbor Light, also known as "Big Red," and the distinctive lighthouse can be adored from the expansive sandy beaches in Holland State Park. The state park is also known for its State Park Explorer Program which teaches visitors about the great state of Michigan. A little interesting fact about Holland, Michigan is that its home to the world’s largest pickle factory! Tourists can visit the H.J. Heinz Company and all of Holland’s other great destinations while visiting the city. Holland Area Map for Your Vacation Planning |
