For a dose of genuine Front Porch Hospitality, travel to the heart of the Bluestern Region of the Flint Hills - to a little city called Emporia, Kansas. The city was formed over 150 years ago and is the home to Kansas’s first public institute of higher learning, Emporia University. The school’s 200 acre campus is home to the National Teacher’s Hall of Fame and Kansas Business Hall of Fame.
 
Situated between Kansas City and Wichita, visitors can explore the Tallgrass National Prairie Reserve. Experience native wildlife, birds, flowers, and grasses along the beautiful nature trails and enjoy a Park Service ranger guided tour of the limestone mansion.
 
Emporia also features the William Allen White House, the superbly decorated former home of William Allen White, known throughout the United States for his contribution to Kansas’s daily newspaper, the Emporia Gazette. Six United States Presidents have been guests at this historic home, nicknamed  Red Rocks  for the stone used on the outside of the building.
 
Children will enjoy the David Traylor Zoo of Emporia. Admission is free, and visitors can take advantage of the programs and activities that are offered daily. Larger animals can be seen from your automobile around the clock. The zoo is located inside Soden’s Grove Park. On summer evenings you can ride the park’s train!
 
While touring Soden’s Grove Park, take the time to visit the All Veterans Memorial, the nation’s first memorial to veterans of all wars. A Word War II Sherman army tank and Vietnam War Huey helicopter are among many of the memorial’s military storied equipment. Each November, the city spends an entire week celebrating Veteran’s Day, for which Emporia is the official founding city.
 
Spend your evening at the historic Emporia Granada Theatre. The theatre was designed in the Spanish Colonial Revival style with a stucco facade. On the south storefront of the theatre, enjoy The Sweet Granada chocolate cafe.
