Amherst Rentals By Owner

As a tourist, the best thing to know about Amherst is how to pronounce its name. Though the majority of places named Amherst are pronounced with the h, Amherst, Massachusetts is not. It is pronounced Am-erst.

Once you get to Amherst without the h, only expect to learn more. Amherst is actually home to 3 of the 5 colleges that populate the Connecticut Pioneer River Valley. They are Amherst College, Hampshire College, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

A great place to start learning is the Dickinson Homestead. Emily Dickinson, the celebrated American poet, was born and lived in Amherst for the majority of her life, and her home was turned into the Dickinson Homestead, a museum that displays original furniture and chronicles her life as a poet. Her grave can also be visited at the West Cemetery in town. To continue learning about celebrated American writers, visit the W. E. B. Du Bois Library located on the University of Massachusetts Amherst campus. This library displays many memoirs and papers written by Du Bois.

The city is also home to many museums. The Amherst College Museum of Natural History is one of the most popular because it showcases the Hitchcock Ichnological Cabinet. The Hitchcock Ichnological Cabinet is a collection of fossilized footmarks collected by Edward Hitchcock, a geologist who was also president of Amherst College. To study a piece of classic architecture, be sure to check out the Theodore Baird Residence that was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

When you’re done learning, the fact that Amherst is a college town can come in handy again. Amherst is full of many bars and restaurants to stay busy, but if in the mood for a bigger city feel, Amherst is less than a 100 miles away from Boston.
