If you know anything about United States history, hearing the word Salem, of course, makes you think one thing: witches. Known as the host city of the Salem Witch Trials, the city still has a mysterious air and appeal. A lot of the attractions of the city play off of this history and theme. There are many New Age and Wiccan boutiques, events centered on Halloween, and witch-themed attractions. The city even went so far as the put witch logos on the police cars. The most recent witch attraction is a statue of Samantha Stephens. The bronze statue represents the witch played by Elizabeth Montgomery on the television series Bewitched. The statue was erected in Salem’s Lappin Park, located on the corner of Washington and Essex streets. The Salem High School’s mascot is the witch, and the playing field for the high school is Gallows Hill, a site where there were numerous public hangings. Throughout October, because Halloween is the biggest time for tourists in Salem, Massachusetts there are plenty of festivals, including the Haunted Happenings. And if you do happen to visit during the Haunted Happenings, the city of Salem is usually offering sales incentive programs during the Halloween season to try and get tourists to come back during their less busy tourist times of the year. If you buy this Passport Program, from October to April, you’ll get discounts on local tourist attractions and retailers. Though the city is buzzing best around Halloween, Salem’s spooky history and appeal exists and is embraced throughout the year. Salem Area Map for Your Vacation Planning |
