A single sculpture is accredited to bringing culture to Grand Rapids, Michigan . In the 1970s, Alexander Calder’s La Grande Vitesse was erected in the city. It is now known locally as " The Calder ," and has helped to begin the tradition of a yearly arts festival. The Festival of the Arts is always held on the first Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in June every year to start the summer off the right way. The Festival of the Arts includes art, poetry, food, music, and dance, and entertains over a million people with the help of 20,000 volunteers. The summer ends with another festival, the Celebration on the Grand. On Labor Day weekend, Grand Rapids comes together to mark the end of the summer with great music and appreciation of the great life of the Grand River Valley. One of the first Celebrations on the Grand helped to open the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum in the area. Located downtown, the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum helps to chronicle Ford’s presidency and stint in the House of Representatives and has also been his resting place since he died in 2006. The Grand Rapid Arts Museum is located next to the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum. The arts museum has a collection of over 5,000 works ranging from Renaissance to Modern art and it also has many special collections from Europe and America. In September, Grand Rapids holds an art contest, ArtPrize . ArtPrize has gained attention because of its grand prize—$250,000—and it American Idol-like judging. The winning artist will be chosen by the public. ArtPrize is sure to become another big attraction of Grand Rapids. Grand Rapids Area Map for Your Vacation Planning |
