Portsmouth, NH is a city in Rockingham County. In fact, Portsmouth is New Hampshire's oldest community. It has a great country town feel to it and with its position at the mouth of the Piscataqua River, it has remained an important historical seaport making it a popular New Hampshire tourist destination. Visit the USS Albacore Museum and Park -- this museum features the USS Albacore, which is a U.S. Navy submarine that was once used for testing, and was then decommissioned and moved to the park in 1985. The submarine is open for daily tours. You can also visit The Music Hall -- a 906-seat theater located in Portsmouth. The Music Hall is the 14th oldest operating theater in the United States. It hosts musical acts, readings, dance, and cinema. Travel a few miles and see the 10th of 11 light stations established prior to the American Revolution, the Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse. You can see the fixed green signal for 12 nautical miles. Other structures at the light station that are still standing are the 1872 keeper’s house, the 1903 oil house, and the 1872 keeper's house. In fact, this lighthouse was actually visited by the Ghost Hunters team for possible paranormal activity and was on the TV show SCARED. Make your last Portsmouth destination the Strawbery Banke Museum. This is an outdoor history museum located in the South End historic district of Portsmouth. This neighborhood was settled by Europeans and is the oldest neighborhood in New Hampshire. It features more than 40 restored buildings built between the 17th and 19th centuries and displays buildings in the Federal, Georgian, and Colonial style architectures. After a mysterious and educational fun day, sip on Portsmouth’s best margaritas and enjoy an innovative menu inspired by the festive foods of the Caribbean at Blue Mermaid Island Grill. Or sit outside on the patio enjoying the sunset with a delicious piece of pizza from Portsmouth Pizza Factory. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
