Newark, home to Rutgers University, is the largest city in New Jersey. It is only 8 miles west of Manhattan and 2 miles north of Staten Island. It also has the Newark Liberty International Airport right nearby, which makes Newark an excellent place to vacation.
 
The Newark Museum is the largest museum in New Jersey. It has collections of decorative, contemporary, and American art, as well as various examples of art from Africa, Asia, and the ancient world. One of the best galleries in the world is the Newark Museum’s Tibetan gallery. This collection, purchased from Christian missionaries in the early twentieth century, has an in-situ Buddhist alter that the Dalai Lama has declared as holy. The Newark Museum also has a mini-zoo with 100 live animals. There is also the Alice Ransom Dreyfuss Memorial Garden, located behind the museum, which holds concerts and performances.
 
An amazing architectural piece of work to see is the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart. It is the 5th largest cathedral in the U.S. and is designed as a gorgeous French-gothic church. Remember the lost at the Fairmount Cemetery, a 150 acre Victorian cemetery. The first to be buried was in 1855 and the cemetery holds a Civil War memorial complete with elaborate monuments. Visit the Military Park, which was designed as a training field for soldiers in 1667 but now holds a number of pieces of statuary from the Wars of America Monument (unveiled in 1926) and a bust of John Fitzgerald Kennedy that was unveiled in 1965.
 
Take a bike ride through Branch Brook Park, a four-mile-long park with a beautiful scenic path along the water and beautiful, fragrant cherry blossoms. Or listen to the Grammy Award-winning New Jersey Symphony Orchestra in the 6th largest performing arts center, the New Jersey Performing Arts Center.
 
But don’t go away hungry. Have some American cuisine at the Savoy Grill and go upstairs to the lounge to relax and have a drink.
