Santa Fe, New Mexico, the capitol of New Mexico, is nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Santa Fe has been voted as one of the most popular travel destinations in the U.S., and for good reason! Want to see some real art? Then just visit Canyon Road, the highest concentration of art galleries in the city. Santa Fe’s art is the second largest market in the U.S. Canyon Road showcases a wide array of contemporary Southwestern, American, Russian, Native American, and experimental art. Walk through the 200-acre living history museum at El Rancho de las Golondrinas, where the 33 buildings come to life and historically-costumed interpreters weave and bake bread. If you’re here between June and August, then come listen to the Santa Fe Opera, which puts on productions, as well as the Santa Fe Jazz and Music Festival held around the same time. Another wonderful popular time to come is around the second week of September when the skies are clear and blue, and the aspens in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains turn yellow. Visit one of the oldest existing churches in the U.S., The Chapel of San Miguel in Santa Fe. This Spanish style church, with high windows and thick walls meant for protection, was built after the Pueblo Revolt. Get some shopping done downtown for some home furnishings, rugs and brightly colored clothing. For some good eating, try out Coyote Café, a Santa Fe staple of fine food, as well as their upper level to the La Cantina which is a rooftop bar that serves some amazing margaritas. Can’t decide what to eat? Then pick your choice of tapas at El Farol or have some truly authentic northern Mexican food at La Choza, where they’re known for their delicious red and green chili sauces.
