Bismarck is the capital of North Dakota, and its capitol building is a dominant landmark in the skyline. The North Dakota State Capitol building displays its prominence and towers over downtown Bismarck. Often referred to as "The Skyscraper on the Prairie," the building and the capitol grounds are one of the city’s main tourist attractions because they are teeming with trails, parks, and historical monuments—the grandest and most visited being The Pioneer Family. The two main parks on the capitol grounds are the Myron Atkinson Park, which is accessed by a tunnel that runs under the road, and Capitol Park, which is more kid-friendly with its playground and gardens. The Belle Mehus Auditorium is located in close proximity to the capitol building, and is considered the hub of cultural activity in Bismarck. The Belle Mehus Auditorium is home to the Bismarck-Mandan Symphony Orchestra and the Northern Plains Dance Company, both of which hold performances throughout the year. Also located in downtown Bismarck is the city’s main shopping district, which is home to the Kirkwood Mall and many other small shops and restaurants. Bismarck sits on the Missouri River, so a lot of downtime in the city is spent enjoying the view of the water and the water itself. Sertoma Park is located along on the banks of the Missouri River and offers tons of activities for the city’s residents and visitors. Sertoma Park is home to the Super Slide Amusement Park, the Dakota Zoo, and tons of biking and hiking trails. Fishing, mainly for smallmouth bass, northern pike, and Chinook salmon, is a big activity on the Missouri River, and hunting, for deer, pheasant, and waterfowl, along its banks. Bismarck, North Dakota, with its mild summers, is a great place to visit to spend some time in the great outdoors. Bismarck Area Map for Your Vacation Planning |
