Located in the Red River Valley , Grand Forks, North Dakota is home to the oldest institution in the state, the University of North Dakota . Open since 1883, the University of North Dakota adds a great cultural level to the city of Grand Forks. On the university’s campus is the North Dakota Museum of Art. Traveling exhibits and regional, as well as national, artists are on display year-round at the North Dakota Museum of Art .
 
The Burtness Theatre and the Chester Fritz Auditorium are also both located on the campus of the University of North Dakota. The larger of the two, "The Fritz," frequently holds musical and dance performances, as well as traveling Broadway shows.
 
Each year, a big event of the school is the University of North Dakota Writer’s Conference . For a week, national and international writers come together in Grand Forks and participate in themed discussions and forums. In the past and in recent years, such popular writers as Truman Capote and Salman Rushdie have participated. A film festival is also held in conjunction with the University of North Dakota Writer’s Conference.
 
Hockey is the biggest sport at the school, so be sure to check out the Fighting Sioux while in Grand Forks. The city is covered when it comes to outdoor recreation. The Grand Forks Park District has established 14 neighborhood parks, a swimming pool, and 28 tennis courts all over the city. Sertoma Park is one of the bigger parks established by the Grand Forks Park District , and while boasting the usual playgrounds, sports fields, and picnic areas, the park is also home to a Japanese garden.
 
Summer is, of course, the best time of the year to visit North Dakota , but if you brave the winter, the great parks in the area also have tons of indoor and outdoor ice skating rinks that make it worth the trip.
