Fishing takes place at the head of the Red River of the North. The most popular species of fish found in the Red River of the North are catfish, northern pike, and smallmouth bass. In the winter, ice fishing becomes popular, and Wahpeton holds the annual Ice Fishing Derby for both the adults and the youth in the area.
 
Other outdoor activities include bird-watching. Wahpeton is located on the Western flyway—the patch of sky in the western hemisphere in which birds migrate—so many waterfowl make their way through the area. Birds are found in great number in Wahpeton during the migration season.
 
Outdoor sports are also popular. The Bois de Sioux Golf Course, Wahpeton’s most popular, is the only golf course in the country that is located half in one state and half in another!
 
Chahinkapa Park in Wahpeton is home to playgrounds from which the children playing can spot many zoo animals! The nearby Chahinkapa Zoo is the home to bears, buffalo, llamas, elk, and many more animals. The park also has many sports fields and a swimming pool to enjoy during the summer.
