The history of Kent, Ohio is marred by the ever-present remembrance of the Kent State Massacre . During a protest against the Vietnam War, Kent State University students were shot and killed on campus. The university was immediately closed, but re-opened as a National Historic Landmark within years. As a big part of the city’s history, Kent State University draws tourists interested in learning more about the event. On the campus are both the May 4th Memorial and the Memorial Gym Annex dedicated to the victims of the Kent State Massacre. There’s a lot more to be learned while visiting Kent. Nicknamed " The Tree City ", Kent is home to the rare breed of black squirrels, which have unofficially become the city’s mascot. They can be found throughout the city and on Kent State University’s campus. Every year, the university holds the Black Squirrel Festival , which is essentially an outdoor market and outdoor music venue meant to show off the rare breed of squirrel which hailed from Canada. The Black Squirrel Festival is held in September. Other great outdoor activities happen at the Kent Bog State Nature Preserve . Filled with a great volume of natural bogs, the Kent State Nature Preserve also has the largest number of tamarack trees in Ohio. There’s a great boardwalk trail at the park that takes visitors through the bogs and trees. With tons of great shopping and restaurants in the downtown area, Kent is a great vacation spot.
