Tahlequah, Oklahoma is a beautiful city nestled away in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains, between the Illinois River and Lake Tenkiller. This city has so much character, with many of the street signs and storefronts still written in Cherokee, and holds so much history you are sure to find an amazing story everywhere you turn.
 
The name Tahlequah is said to have derived from the Cherokee word "Ta ‘ligwa" meaning "just two". The story has been passed down for centuries that 3 elders were to meet late one night to discuss where the Cherokee Nation’s permanent capitol would be, and only 2 showed up, giving the city its new name.
 
While in the area, visiting the Cherokee Landing State Park is a must! The park is located close to Tahlequah in Park Hill, Oklahoma. Enjoy a magical sunset or sunrise; relax for a day on the lake fishing or getting sucked in to a good book while enjoying the peace and serenity all around you. If you are not out on the water, take a seat under one of the many perfectly aged trees and enjoy the shade and a nice cool breeze.
 
Tahlequah is also home to Northeastern University. This campus has a nice mix of old and new architecture, so you never know what you will find around the corner. Tour the campus and learn all the interesting details of the campus’s history, starting all the way back in 1851 where the original Cherokee National Seminary was located.
 
If you visit Tahlequah in the spring, you will be able to take part in the Indian Territory Days which are held at the Adams Corner Rural Village. This village takes visitors back a century to experience what life was like back then through fun games, classes in the little old school house, lessons on how to weave, and many other family friendly activities.
 
Tahlequah, Oklahoma is a wonderful place for anyone to spend a nice relaxing week or weekend. Learn a lot about the history of the Cherokees or just experience the sense of peace and calm the city holds.
