Millions flock to the tiny town of Keystone, South Dakota, each year to gaze upon the famed Mount Rushmore. Carved by dynamite and by hand and taking 14 years to complete, the Mount Rushmore National Memorial was the brainchild of sculptor Gutzon Borglum. Nearly 400 men and women assisted in this massive undertaking, which features the visages of four United States Presidents - George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln and was completed in 1941.
 
And though visitors may come to Keystone to see Mount Rushmore, they will certainly find plenty of other activities to keep them busy. South Dakota vacations offer stunning beauty and incredible outdoor activities. Hunting and fishing are big business in these parts and there are plenty of sweet hunting spots to engage even the most discerning big game hunter. Hiking, caving, rock climbing and mountain biking are also popular pursuits, especially in nearby Custer State Park. The park is also home to the impressive granite spires along the Needles Highway.
 
Black Hills travel is the perfect opportunity to explore the unique history of the American pioneers. Whether you choose a self-guided walking tour through the many historic buildings and landmarks of Keystone's downtown or a visit to one of several museums paying homage to the pioneer settlers and Native American culture, the Black Hills Dakota region is a wonderful place to bring the past to life, enthralling the expert and novice alike. Children especially may enjoy a visit to the One Room Schoolhouse museum, celebrating the life and legacy of the Ingalls family of the Little House on the Prairie fame. Carrie Ingalls, one of the Ingalls' daughters (the younger sister of Laura Ingalls Wilder), lived in Keystone for 35 years and older sister Mary lived with Carrie and her family for several years before her death.
 
Other unique attractions include panning for gold in an authentic gold mine, enjoying the awe-inspiring Black Hills scenery while riding on an 1880 train, taking a ride down the Alpine slide and exploring the presidential history of the United States in the National Presidential Wax Museum.
