Mitchell, South Dakota is home to the world's only Corn Palace. The Mitchell Corn Palace is a sports and entertainment venue in the center of town that is covered entirely in a mural of locally grown corn, with the occasional bits of native grasses and straw thrown in here and there. The Mitchell Corn Palace is one of the oldest buildings in the history of South Dakota, dating back to 1892. It was created to showcase the flourishing agricultural industry of South Dakota.
 
The theme of the Corn Palace mural changes each year, with the year's mural installed during the late summer/early fall harvest. In late August, approximately twenty mural decorators begin the process of taking down the previous mural and using more than 275,000 ears of naturally grown colored corn to create the new mural. Twelve colors of corn are used, but none are dyed - fields of colored corn are grown throughout Mitchell for exclusive use of the Corn Palace.
 
While in town to visit Mitchell's Corn Palace, you'll want to take advantage of the sights and sounds of this charming city. Children and adults will enjoy a visit to the Dakota Discovery Museum, where travelers are treated to a glimpse into the lives of the South Dakota pioneers and Native Americans that settled the region. And a visit to the Mitchell Prehistoric Indian Village archaeological site is a fantastic way to bring history to life. Children can even participate in an arrowhead dig.
