Situated on the banks of the Missouri River, Vermillion, South Dakota is a small town with an important history. On August 24, 1804, explorers Lewis & Clark camped at the mouth of the Vermillion River before continuing on to Spirit Mound during their famed 19th century expedition. Today, visitors to Vermillion can visit Spirit Mound and walk in Lewis & Clark's famed footsteps, hiking and exploring the surrounding wilderness. Hiking is a popular activity in Vermillion and numerous parks and nature trails offer plenty of ground to cover, as well as places to bike, jog and enjoy the great outdoors.
 
Vermillion visitors will want to explore the cultural opportunities of the city as well. Vermillion is home to the University of South Dakota (USD), established in 1862 and South Dakota's oldest university. The University of South Dakota houses several museums, galleries and art exhibitions on campus, including the National Music Museum. The National Music Museum contains more than fourteen thousand instruments, representing nearly every culture and historic period throughout the world.
 
USD fields Division I teams, the USD Coyotes, who hold their events at the Dakota Dome sports complex - the only domed stadium in South Dakota. The Dakota Dome also hosts the South Dakota High School Football playoffs each year, as well as multiple seasonal and annual regional events.
 
Leisure time in Vermillion is often spent leisurely strolling through historic Downtown Vermillion, browsing in the unique retail and speciality shops or visiting with friends over a wonderful meal in the charming cafes and restaurants.
