Bennington is a small New England community that is steeped in history. In the late 18th century, Bennington, Vermont was the site of a Revolutionary Battle. This battle was remembered a century later through the design and building of the city’s grandest attraction—which is actually the tallest man-made structure in the state—the Bennington Battle Monument . The limestone obelisk stands on 15 Monument Circle in the city, and at the top, a viewer can see out into Vermont, New York, and Massachusetts. Though it’s not known for its height, an attraction that is grander still is the grave of great American poet, Robert Frost. Located in the Old Bennington Cemetery, the grave of Robert Frost is visited each year by many who loved the work of the Pulitzer Prize winning writer. Located near the graveyard is the Park-McCullough Historic House . The Park-McCullough Historic House is a perfectly preserved 35 room Victorian mansion. Built in the 19th century, the mansion is open for the public to tour daily from May to October, and then by appointment November through April. The history of the city and of Vermont is preserved at the Bennington Museum . One of the biggest exhibits at the Bennington Museum is that of Bennington Pottery. Categorized as utilitarian earthenware and stoneware, the pottery, decorated with birds, flowers, and animals, has been crafted in the area since the 18th century. The museum is also home to fine art, American glass, and Vermont furniture. To learn all about Vermont and its rich history, be sure and stop by this must-see museum. Surrounded by beautiful scenery and with a rich historical flavor, Bennington is a unique and interesting vacation spot. Bennington Area Map for Your Vacation Planning |
