Manchester, a small city in the South of Vermont , is a great laid-back vacation spot. The city lies in between two mountain ranges, the Green Mountains to the east and the Taconic Mountains to the west. Both mountain ranges are easily reached from Manchester.
 
The Green Mountains are known for skiing. As the home to the Killington and Pico ski resorts, thousands flock to the range daily, so Manchester is a great place to retreat and get away from the crowds. The highest peak of the Taconic Mountains is located in Manchester— Mount Equinox . While hiking Mount Equinox be sure to check out its many unique landmarks. Both a radio station, WEQX, and an old hotel, the Sky Line Inn , are located on the way to the summit, but the most interesting landmark is when you actually reach the top. An abandoned Cold War era radar station still stands on Mount Equinox and is kept for its historical appeal.
 
In the valley of the mountain is the Charterhouse of the Transfiguration Monastery . Through the trees of Mount Equinox the simplistic architecture of the Charterhouse of the Transfiguration can be seen. The monastery is open year-round for vocational retreats, but they do not allow those who do not feel called to the Carthusian faith into the facility.
 
Another appeal of Manchester is its great outlet shopping . It has great stores like Brooks Brothers and Ralph Lauren. There are also many local boutiques in which to make unique purchases on your laid-back vacation .
