In southern West Virginia, Beckley is known for its two major tourist attractions, the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine and West Virginia’s Tamarack.
 
The Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine is a big part of Beckley’s economic history. The area of Appalachia relies heavily on coal mining, and Beckley is no exception. The city uses the exhibition coal mine to educate its visitors. Tours are held daily, and even trips into the underground mines are now possible. There is also a youth museum on site that includes hands-on exhibits and a planetarium. The Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine is a great family excursion.
 
The Tamarack is known throughout the state for bringing together the best of West Virginia. Artists from all over the state bring their creations to the red-roofed building, which is essentially an everyday arts and crafts festival. The crafts range from textiles to pottery to woodwork. Some silversmiths even showcase their fine jewelry craftsmanship at the Tamarack. Local writers throughout the state also come to share and sell their work. Various music and theatrical performances are put on display in the venue, and food and wine tastings happen throughout the year. The food court on the premises is called "A Taste of West Virginia" and has options like bluegrass bar-be-que and jams jellies that are specific to the area.
