As the capital of West Virginia , Charleston has earned itself much attention and many pleasant nicknames, the first being the "Home of Hospitality." The fact that the city was given this nickname must mean that it is a great place to visit. It is said that southern charm somehow made it all the way up the northern West Virginia . The city’s many parks are great places to go and experience this hospitality. Cato Park and Coonskin Park are places to enjoy the brisk West Virginia on a hike or having a picnic. The biggest park in the area is Kanawha State Forest . Open all the time to the public, the Kanawha State Forest boasts many camping sites, trails, sheltered picnic areas, and even a pool. Along with its hospitality, Charleston, West Virginia also takes pride in its culture, and this is showcased throughout the year in many festivals. The long-running Symphony Sunday is one of the city’s favorites. The first Sunday in June every year, the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra gives a free show and sets off a fireworks display. Leading up to that performance at night, other dancing and musical acts perform for the public. Charleston is also the host of the West Virginia International Film Festival. Twice a year, once in April and once in November, the state comes together to watch and praise various types and genres of film produced by students pursuing a higher education in the state. The all-around arts festival in the area is the FestivALL. The FestivALL showcases all aspects of art, including a popular wine and jazz portion, for a week in June. Throughout the year, art can be enjoyed in the Sunrise Museum, which is a part of the Clay Center for the Arts and Sciences. Other museums in the area include the Avampato Discovery Museum and the West Virginia State Museum. With its hospitality, history, and entertainment, Charleston is definitely worth visiting!
