Harpers Ferry, West Virginia is a historic town that sits on both the Potomac River and the Shenandoah River. Thus, the city is known for its water recreation. Many travel to Harpers Ferry yearly to experience its white water rafting. In March through November, visit the rivers to experience exhilarating and guided fun. Other popular river excursions include canoeing, kayaking, and tubing. Harpers Ferry is known as one of the stops on the Appalachian Trail . The Appalachian Trail Conservancy headquarters, a non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of the trail, is located in Harpers Ferry, and it is a great place to stop and learn about the trail and how to keep it thriving. The Appalachian Trail passes right through Harpers Ferry National Historic Park so to hike a small, less strenuous portion of the trail, you can visit the park. The Harpers Ferry National Historic Park is also known for its rafting opportunities as it sits on the city’s rivers, as well as boating and fishing. Bass are the most popular fish to catch for sport in the rivers. Crabbing and shellfishing are also popular on the Potomac. Harpers Ferry National Historic Park is also the home to a couple museums worth checking out—the Civil War Museum and A Place in Time Museum. Along Shenandoah, Potomac, and High Streets, the most popular in the area, are all the museums, shops, and restaurants.
