Located on the banks of the Fox River, Appleton, Wisconsin is famously known as the childhood home of Houdini. At the Museum at the Castle, the main and intriguing attraction Appleton, the city chronicles his life and achievements in a permanent Houdini exhibit. The picks, the locks, the keys, and the handcuffs he used in his magic shows are on display, and because of this tie to magic and the unknown, Halloween is a great time of year to visit Appleton and the museum. The many Halloween happenings at the museum include pumpkin carving, a magic workshop, and a performance given by a local historian who shares ghost stories from the nearby Fox Valley. The Museum at the Castle also focuses on the history of the nearby Fox River Valley in its everyday exhibits.
 
Appleton was also the childhood home of Joseph McCarthy, the senator strongly tied to the Red Scare, and the Museum at the Castle is the home of many artifacts of the controversial man’s life as a student, judge, marine, and, most popularly, a senator.
 
There are two other historic locations worth visiting in Appleton: the Hearthstone House, a nineteenth century mansion that was the first in the world to use hydroelectricity, and the Paper Discovery Center, an old factory turned museum that chronicles the process of paper-making right down to the antique paper-making machines they have on display.
 
After your history lessons, head to the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center to catch a show or to lovely downtown Appleton to enjoy the nightlife.
