La Crosse is a small Wisconsin community filled with the arts. Throughout the surrounding Coulee region, La Crosse is known for its cultural ties. The small city is the home of the La Crosse Symphony Orchestra. The La Crosse Symphony Orchestra performs year-round, with varying events and showcases. The Pump House Regional Arts Center serves many cultural purposes in the city. The center acts as an art gallery and a performance venue for jazz, folk, and blues performers—music that is very popular in La Crosse. Other musical performances can be seen at the Warehouse, an all ages concert venue that is part of La Crosse’s nightlife scene.
 
The Alpine Inn, with great views of the water, and the Popcorn Tavern are also staples. La Crosse prides itself on its local restaurants. One of the most popular is the Back Door Café. It serves what they refer to as American Continental cuisine in an old Victorian style mansion. Also try out Culina Mariana and Digger’s Sting—a restaurant that is a point of gossip in the city because of its infamous owner. For breakfast, Fayze’s Restaurant and Bakery is a must-visit, and for a bar-be-que lunch overlooking Old Man River, visit Piggy’s.
 
A lot of these great restaurants can be sampled at the city’s main event, the Great River Folk Festival. Every year in the August the University of Wisconsin’s campus in La Crosse hosts the cultural, family-friendly event. The Great River Folk Festival strives to promote folk culture through music, arts and crafts, and dance. During the festival is a great time to visit and enjoy La Crosse.
