Madison is the capital of Wisconsin, and a great landmark to visit while in the city is the Wisconsin State Capitol building. Situated between Lake Monona and Lake Mendota on the isthmus, the Wisconsin State Capitol is a granite fixture in the Madison skyline. Tours of the building are easy to book online and over the phone. State Capitol Square is located on the popular State Street. Cars have limited access to State Street, so it is a pedestrian friendly-zone filled with great shops and restaurants. Located close to the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, State Street is filled with young and hip energy. For more upscale shopping and dining, like the city’s popular European cuisine restaurant Café Continental, head to nearby King Street. Throughout the summer, the State Capitol Square comes alive. The Dane County Farmer’s Market is held every Saturday morning in the square, and the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra performs a free concert every Wednesday night. Other great events during the summer include the extremely popular Great Taste of the Midwest Craft Beer Festival and Rhythm and Booms. Rhythm and Booms is the annual Fourth of July celebration in Madison that includes a plethora of fireworks, Air Force flyovers, and live entertainment. Described as "the City of Four Lakes", Madison rests on the banks of the aforementioned Lake Monona and Lake Mendota, as well as Lake Waubesa and Lake Kegonsa. The presence of these bodies of water makes Madison a huge fishing vacation destination. The popular fish caught for sport in the four lakes are northern pike, walleye, muskie, and bluegill. The city is also an hour drive from Milwaukee and a two hour drive from Chicago, so the great attractions of those two cities can also be enjoyed while visiting Madison.
