Many aspects of Laramie are uniquely Wyoming, the natural attractions and scenery especially. The Ames Monument is a great example. The granite pyramid, which was commissioned in the late 19th century, utilizes the national resources of the state and is interesting and unique like the state itself. The Ames Monument was built by the Union Pacific Railroad Company, and the railroad plays a vital role in Laramie’s history.
 
The Laramie Union Pacific Train Depot is one of the must-see historic sites in the city. This station was one of the last to be built in the traditional train depot style. Partially housed in the Laramie Union Pacific Train Depot is the Nici Self Museum. The Nici Self Museum is meant to educate its visitors on mining, lumberjacking, ranching, and railroading—practices that have always been very important to the state’s economy. Equipment from all of the professions are on site, including an old caboose and tractors.
 
Another big part of Laramie’s history is Wyoming’s House for Historic Women . The landmark is actually the location of where Lousia Swain was the first woman in the world to cast a ballot. The museum highlights the road to gaining civil equality for women. It is open on Wednesday to Saturday afternoons during the summer months.
