First settled in 1768, New Smyrna was once a haven for rumrunners and other smugglers, who enjoyed hiding among the Indian River's lagoons and numerous tiny islands. These beautiful natural features can be experienced at the Marine Discovery Center along the Indian River estuary. Seawater and fresh water mix together to create one of the world's most stunning and diverse ecosystems, with over 4,000 species of animals and plants. A twilight cruise or guided kayak tour is a must. Above, watch for pelicans and bald eagles; below, meet some of the world's friendliest sea creatures, including bottle-nosed dolphins and giant manatees. Historical areas like Flagler Avenue and Canal Street make New Smyrna a touring and shopping destination. Browse among arts and crafts galleries, pottery shops, jewelers and clothing boutiques, and enjoy the day spas, wine bistros, fresh seafood and more. Visit the mysterious Turnbull ruins, the haunting remains of an early colonial fort or church. The New Smyrna Sugar Mill Ruins are also a popular attraction, with seventeen acres of stone and brick buildings dating back to the early 1800s.
