Huntsville, Alabama's greatest claim to fame is that it is one of the hometowns of NASA. Also, as the home to the George C. Marshall Space Flight Center, Huntsville experiments with and oversees any shuttle launching. The Marshall Space Flight Center and U.S. Space and Rocket Center helped Huntsville to be designated as a National Historic Landmark. This is also because it is home to the only Saturn V Rocket. The Saturn V—pronounced Saturn Five—is the largest and most powerful launch rocket that was produced during the 1970s. Another great and historic part of Huntsville is its abundance of antebellum homes. Alabama’s greatest concentration of antebellum homes exist in the Twickenham Historic District. The homes in the area follow the Greek Revival Architectural Style made-popular in the 19th century. One the couple houses that are toured in the area, the most popular is that of Howard Weeden, a female artist and poet. It is called the 1819 Weeden House Museum. Huntsville has three historic districts, and the other two are the Old Town Historic District and the Five Points Historic District. Both contain various styles of beautiful homes. Historic downtown Huntsville also hosts the Big Spring Festival annually. The Big Spring Festival is a three-day music festival held on the last weekend in September and features all types of music, including, rock, country, and Christian. Also, the Panoply Arts Festival, held in April, is put on to help enhance the arts in the area through presentations, performances, and workshops. Both festivals are held in the city’s Big Springs International Park, and if you are interested in a little recreation after touring Huntsville historic attractions, check out this park for a good hike or to leisurely admire the waterfall and scenery.
