St Augustine Vacation Rentals and Lodging
St. Augustine is known as the nation's oldest city, or ";The Ancient City". So, needless to say, learning the history of the city is a big part of a vacation in St. Augustine. The historic district of the city is the primary location for St. Augustine to show off its unique history. With cobblestone streets and bed and breakfasts located in preserved architecture, having lunch at one of the quaint cafes in the district is an exciting experience. Spread throughout St. Augustine are other historic spots that cannot be missed. The Castillo de San Marcos is a National Monument that pays homage to the city's Spanish roots. The limestone walls of the fortress took 23 years to fashion, and you'll wish you had that much time to enjoy the architectural wonder. To the south of Castillo de San Marcos is Fort Matanzas. Also built during Spanish reign in the 18th century, Fort Matanzas has played a key role in Florida's history. The local college, Flagler College, is located in the city's first hotel, the Ponce de Leon, and regular tours of the beautiful campus are given. A historical trip would, of course, not be complete with a trip to a couple of St. Augustine museums. There are many in St. Augustine to choose from, but the most popular is the Lightner Museum. The Lightner Museum runs the gamut within its walls, and displays the expected, Spanish and Florida history, but also the unexpected like shrunken heads and mummies. Located in North Florida, St. Augustine is convenient to Jacksonville, Orlando, and Daytona, and those destinations are common stops on a Florida vacation. Check out a Jacksonville Jaguars NFL game on the drive down, or after a historical trip in St. Augustine head to Disney World in Orlando or to the famous NASCAR race in Daytona. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
