Abaco Rentals By Owner
If you’ve ever wanted to see what the Caribbean looked like before tourism and development, a vacation rental in the Abaco Islands is the ideal beach destination. The Abaco Islands in the northern Bahamas include more than a dozen small inhabited islands, plus countless uninhabited little islands and cays. The central island is Great Abaco, and other major islands include Green Turtle Cay and Elbow Cay. The Abaco Islands were settled by British loyalists who fled the United States after the Revolution, bringing a unique culture and history to these islands. These islands are among the best places in the world for snorkeling and SCUBA diving. Beginners will appreciate the friendly local dive shops where people are happy to teach, as well as the calm, shallow Sea of Abaco (which is also great for kayaking!). More advanced snorkelers and divers will love the extensive barrier reefs, the coral cavern labyrinths, and the centuries of shipwrecks waiting to be explored. Beginners and experts alike will enjoy the abundant wildlife, including turtles and bottle-nosed dolphins, and the impressive variety of undersea life in these waters! Of course, we all like a little civilization on our vacations… Marsh Harbour on Great Abaco is the largest city in the Abacos, with a population of 6,000. Here you will find all the amenities you could want. It is a great place to charter a deep-sea fishing boat or join in a sailing regatta. You can also rent a car here—but be careful not to run the island’s one stoplight! Hope Town on Elbow Cay has one of the very last lighthouses in the world to be powered by kerosene and cranked by hand. Built in 1864 by the British Empire, the lighthouse remains functional and stands above the town like cheerful red and white barber’s pole. No cars are allowed on Hope Town’s two streets, which are great places to walk and take in the very old New England colonial architecture of the town. Elbow Cay is small and quiet, but has charming little restaurants and shops for your comfort. Green Turtle Cay is another populated island with shops and restaurants. You can visit historic New Plymouth, while includes the Loyalist Memorial Sculpture Garden and Albert Lowe Museum, where you can learn about the history of the Abaco Islands. Other islands, like Great Guana Cay and Manjack Cay, have only a tiny handful of residents and will truly get you away from it all. Such smaller islands can only be reached by boat. Whether you’re looking for eco-adventure or just a very quiet place to relax, there are plenty of wonderful vacation rental options in the Abaco Islands. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
