Martha’s Vineyard is primarily known as a summer colony. Martha’s Vineyard is comprised of 6 towns: Tisbury, Edgartown, Oak Bluffs, West Tisbury, Chilmark, and Aquinnah. They are all known for different things. Tisbury and Oak Bluffs are points of entry on the island, as the island is only accessible by boat. Oak Bluffs is also, along with Edgartown, known for its nightlife. Chilmark is famous for being the rural town. West Tisbury is the island’s agricultural center. The whole island is known for its famous inhabitants, and Aquinnah is known as Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis’ home up until her death. For many fans, John Belushi’s grave is a big draw of Martha’s Vineyard. It is located in the Abel’s Hill Cemetery.
 
All of Martha’s Vineyard attractions take place mainly during the summer months. It became a summer colony become of its pleasant summer weather. Many people use this island to escape the heat of New York City. The island is also full of beautiful beaches—something that can’t be found in the surrounding cities. Because of its summer popularity, July 4th is one of the biggest times of the year on Martha’s Vineyard. Edgartown always hosts the fireworks show on the island. The annual Agricultural Fair is always a big time on the island too. It happens on a weekend in late August in West Tisbury. Martha’s Vineyard is also home to an annual film festival, the Illumination Festival, which happens every year in September. Martha’s Vineyard is a great island to visit in the summer!
