Take Comfort in history in Comfort, Texas. What this tiny town of nearly 2,500 residents lacks in size is more than made up in the lore and history of the community. Founded in 1854 by German settlers, Comfort had a colorful past in the 1800s when Civil War skirmishes made their way into city limits. Fallen heroes are commemorated by a Civil War monument, rumored to be the only place outside of Arlington National Cemetery where the United States flag flies at half-mast year round.
 
Comfort is unique in that almost the entire town has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Walking through Comfort's downtown is like stepping back in time - the nearly 100 buildings of the historic district provide a charming lesson on the history and architecture of the American past. While many of the wonderful old buildings have undergone major restoration, two were so well preserved from the beginning that they are still in their original shape - the Ingenhuett-Faust Hotel built in 1880 and the 1930s Comfort Theater.
 
Visitors to this charming hamlet will enjoy walking through town and exploring the history and culture of the buildings, shopping in charming antique stores and dining in unique local establishments.
