Gulf Shores is the main beach vacation destination in the state of Alabama. Located on the Southern shore of the state, the city is equipped with 32 miles of white sand beaches and overlooks the beautiful blue water of the Gulf of Mexico. Great for family beach vacations, Gulf Shores and the neighboring communities come together to provide tons of entertainment. The major forms of entertainment come during Mardi Gras. Being so close to New Orleans, the city takes on some of its charm and excitement during that time of the year. Complete with parades, the city really steps up to celebrate despite its laid-back, beach setting. In October, Gulf Shores always hosts the annual Shrimp Festival. The Shrimp Festival is a four-day event that showcases fine arts, arts and crafts, and musical entertainment. Fishing is a huge sport in the area, and there are many charter fishing companies that take fishing enthusiasts out in hopes of making a few good catches. Depending on your level of enthusiasm, you can choose between a short half-day trip out into the Gulf and up to an overnight trip that can last a couple days. There is always a lot happening on the beaches as well. If you for some reason aren’t content to just enjoy the leisure and great scenery, there are always tons of tournaments happening. One of the more popular is the annual volleyball tournament that takes place during the summer.
