The best time to visit Anchorage, and Alaska in general, is during its short summers, which run from about mid-May to early September. Even at this time, the weather is considered cool (so take a light jacket)but definitely pleasant. The days are long, and even at night, the sun barely sets.
 
Anchorage offers great scenery and tons of entertainment. A great draw of the area is the wildlife. Bears and moose are commonly seen, even within the city limits. Bald eagles are abundant. Whales can even be sometimes sighted while driving on the Seward Highway.
 
In the downtown Anchorage Town Square, there is the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts. The Alaska Center for the Performing Arts hosts many performances throughout the year. The center is actually the home of three different theatres: the Evangeline Atwood Concert Hall, the Discovery Theatre, and the Sydney Laurence Theatre. All three venues host the same kinds of performances, like operas, theatre performances, and musical acts, but they vary in the size of the crowd they can accommodate. Every year the center hosts the annual International Ice Carving Competition, which is actually a part of the Fur Rendezvous Festival.
 
In February of every year, Anchorage hosts the Fur Rendezvous Festival, a festival that includes over 100 events including skiing competitions and a sled dog race for children. The Fur Rendezvous Festival leads into Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race yearly. The Iditarod is Anchorage’s sled dog race that involves teams of 16 dogs that race for almost 1200 miles. The opening ceremony is always held in Anchorage, and then the teams start the race in near-by Willow. Despite Alaska’s colder weather during this time, witnessing the Iditarod is definitely worth the trip to Anchorage.
