Recreation and outdoor activities are very important and popular in Gaylord, Michigan . Gaylord’s Hartwick Pines State Park and Mason Tract Pathway have two of the best places for cross-country skiing in the state. This has a lot to do with the area’s mild summers and its location on the "snowbelt" of Michigan . Snow-shoeing and snow-mobile riding are also huge in Gaylord because of the great snowfall.
 
The city is also located close to the Au Sable River and the Manistee River , so many water sports are prevalent. Fly-fishing and other types of angling are particularly popular; trout being the main catch. Around the water’s edge, tons of white tail deer appear and are hunted for sport.
 
There are three notable festivals that take place during the summer in Gaylord, one per each hot month. In June is Gaylord Air Fair . This festival showcases airplanes and has tons of static displays and fly-bys of different aircrafts. Attendants of the festival also enjoy many varities of food and tours of airplanes. In July is the Gaylord Alpenfest . Alpenfest is five days full of live entertainment, a parade, contests, a pancake breakfast, and what they call the "World’s Largest Coffee Break." In August is Farmfest . Farmfest is a four-day music festival that also includes a harmonica playing contest, drum-circles, a labyrinth walk, great food, and tons to do for children.
 
The same can be said for Gaylord as a city: great food, great entertainment, and tons to do for everyone.
