The city of Fairbanks considers itself "extremely Alaska." The best time to visit Fairbanks, just like every other Alaskan city, is during the summer months. The temperature, which ranges from 65 to 90, is still considered cool for the summer months, so be sure to bring along a light jacket.
 
Another great aspect of the summer in Alaska is that the days seem to never end. In the winter, the shortest day is little over 3 hours, but in the summer, the longest day lasts over 21 hours. There is always some daylight left in Fairbanks to check out just a little bit more of the city. And you will always want to get one last glance of Fairbanks’ wonderful, natural scenery.
 
A great way to check out the scenery is through the Riverboat Discovery touring company. The company operates sternwheel riverboats on the two rivers located in Fairbanks. The Riverboat Discovery offers daily tours, and sometimes charters, every day from mid-May until mid-September. Other great places to visit while in Fairbanks during the summer are the El Dorado Gold Mine, the Fairbanks Coffee Roasting Company, and Pioneer Park.
 
But the city would still love for you to visit during the off-season. Dog sledding competitions aren’t the same during the summer months, and, also, the Aurora Borealis, or more commonly, the Northern Lights, take place during the winter months. The Northern Lights are essentially fluorescent lights that appear to be dancing in the night sky like ribbons. Seeing the Northern Lights alone are reason to visit Fairbanks, Alaska.
